By the way: I’m not saying this to upset folks or cause alarm. But if this comes to pass, you’ll need to be prepared to take action quickly. I’ve posted this resource before, but it’s worth re-reading. You have the power to save America, if it comes to it. https://choosedemocracy.us/prepare/#10things

I’ve posted and deleted a couple of these since the election was called. A lot of this seems like sound and fury for an audience of one. But as it reaches its crescendo, I’m beginning to fear that it does signify something.
People say it can’t happen here.

Once all the votes are counted, we should revisit our election night feelings, all that frustration and shame over how close it was. Biden won, by 5 million votes, a majority. Got 306 EV’s. Flipped GA & AZ. This election was not close; it just took a bit for that to become clear. https://twitter.com/Redistrict/status/1325584030386020352

The most comforting thing of the last week or so has been seeing one institution — finally — standing up to Trump, in a way that he couldn’t shout into submission. A new feeling, and yet, an old one.
(original)
got this idea in my head last night; finally got around to making it this afternoon. “Are you surprised by my tears, sir? Strongmen also cry! Strongmen also cry.”
(original)
Stephen Colbert, on the verge of tears over what the President did today, has the correct take. It’s not going back to the magic wall, or letting talking heads try to translate. This is not Trump being Trump. It’s an existential crisis for democracy, and it’s time to act like it. https://twitter.com/colbertlateshow/status/1324571460673949702

Sure thing, it’s in this board file! Could be improved tho; the copper pours aren’t part of the footprint, they’re polygons on the board. I was looking at the OSH Park flex stackup and figured that I’d need the copper for extra thickness, which worked! https://github.com/joeycastillo/Sensor-Cap/blob/main/PCB/Main%20Boards/OSO-RING-A2-00.brd

YAY! Charging and USB data both work on the new board. And the whole thing still (mostly!) fits into the test ring, even with the extra flex board. Changed the rainbow swirl into something more 🇺🇸 for now; don’t want to jinx anything, but hoping for good news tonight. 🤞🏽
(original)
New board for sensor ring from @oshpark! I confess: I might be out of my gourd with this one. Flexy version of the programming/charging board, with an origami micro-USB connector. Haven’t assembled yet, but so far it fits snug in a cable and gives me 5 volts, so, fingers crossed?

So bizarre that Trump’s wild anti-democratic threats of litigation are treated as just another bit of analysis on CNN. It’s like “All these patients are alive right now, but The Joker could blow up any one of these five hospitals at any time. How would that affect the map, John?”

That’s the plan! I also want to run discharge curves with the two batteries I use on another project, the Open Book. Probably a task for later this week / early next week, depending on how some democracy-related things go in the next few hours. 🤞

Yep it’s 40! I ordered another battery from a different company that claims 100mAh in a very similar size, but it’s still in transit; eager to test both.
(original)
I’m not going to tweet about the election, because the best idea is to take a deep breath and count the votes. Instead, look at this tiny battery for the sensor ring! IT’S SO TINY! Test enclosure in black; still a little chunky but not bad for a DIY small gadget. To be continued!

Mostly to keep the device as DIY-friendly as possible; these buttons are something people can solder in place & use immediately without any other parts. I also didn’t know a lot of things when I started designing this; totally open to the possibility that there are better ways :)

Nice! I starred with 0805 and only recently graduated to 0603 sized parts; agreed though, you can go a long way with tweezers and a fine tipped iron. Some strong reading glasses help too :)

Responded to a similar question here; Evil Mad Scientist Labs makes an awesome surface-mount 555 replica that I think would be a great stepping stone to the SMT world. Thread also links to a video I made with some tips on assembling the E-Book FeatherWing. https://twitter.com/josecastillo/status/1323753852915560448

After that I do think the E-Book Wing is the better project to start with than the full Open Book. It’s mostly 0805, SOT23 and SOIC components, though there are two tricky parts (the flex connector and the MicroSD slot). I have a video with some tips here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bsh1q2tqaU

If you’ve done some through-hole soldering before, I think the @EMSL surface mount 555 kit would be a good project to start learning SMT with! closer up on that painting, and the dual-purpose guidance. For now it’s hard coded in the sketch for simplicity’s sake, but with the @fast_code_r_us JPEG library working so well on e-paper, there’s no reason you couldn’t make a rotating lock screen with JPEG’s on an SD card :)
(original)
I added a pretty picture to MVBook’s lock screen (a 19th century painting of a librarian in a library), and recorded some notes (🔊) on the thinking behind the low power “user flow.” Code also pushed up. Getting my last bits of productivity in while I can. https://github.com/joeycastillo/The-Open-Book/tree/master/Examples/Open_Book_MVBook

Good morning! Let’s make this an early night. #vote. If you already voted, text your friends & family to make sure they #vote. If they already voted (and your mental state allows it), join a phone bank; call swing state voters to make sure they #vote. Win big and it ends tonight.

spending election night eve writing in my journal with a glass of wine. I remember feeling hope on the eve of the ‘08 election. I also don’t remember feeling fear. then again, the modern republican party has no agenda save quenching hope and sowing fear.
We must end this. #vote
(original)
I’m convinced we will win if this is a fair election, but Republicans are openly trying to steal it. And even if we win, I fear the violence that may ensue, what with Trump supporters ramming trucks into people. This should be the eve of a hopeful day; instead it feels funereal. https://twitter.com/jim_newell/status/1323415867716227073

I’ll have to weigh it, but it feels slightly lighter than a Kindle 4 and it’s smaller, but thicker. One thing that might make it less ideal for hiking is that its screen doesn’t light up, so you’d need like a headlamp to read at night. (also still working on battery life numbers)

I’ve been using this one and can recommend! The default mode takes maybe 2 seconds, but you can get it to 1 second with custom waveforms. It also does grayscale! Note though this only applies to the monochrome version; the tri-color version is much slower. https://zh-tw.buyepaper.com/products/42inch-e-inkanel-spi-interface-buy-eaper-display

My goal has been to get the Open Book to a point where other folks feel empowered to hack on it. With all this, it feels as close to a real hardware platform as it’s felt all year. The prompt was a book you can build yourself that supports all the languages of the world. Not bad.

The case also comes in two thicknesses: if you omit the Feather headers you can fit a 420 mAh battery in the thin 12mm enclosure; with the Feather headers, the 400 mAh battery requires the thicker 14mm version. (E-book Wing enclosure is next on the list, I know, it’s on my radar)

These prints aren’t great, and need a couple of tweaks before I make them public, but the community-contributed board model let me design a thing with tighter tolerances & better ingress protection. Also added rounded corners all around, which feels nicer (when they print right).
(original)
Had a wildly productive Open Book weekend. MVBook finally feels close to done; you can flip through multiple pages of things to read, it saves your place between sessions, and the lock button enables a super low power mode (namely, off). Also, new 3D printed enclosures! A thread.

Awesome, and thanks!! Yea I will say, the E-Book Wing is prolly the better project to start with surface mount stuff; the Open Book packs parts in tighter, and has a couple of more difficult ones.
