Spring cleaning day here at my folks’ house and we have hit the motherlode.

This image is poetry. The red hat; the callous disregard for the health of others; the willful blindness, both figurative and literal. It has everything. https://twitter.com/BrynnTannehill/status/1277211131430535168

Finally got this alert tonight. I arrived in San Antonio over three months ago. In that time I’ve received literally dozens of tornado watches, thunderstorm warnings and AMBER alerts. Dozens of activations. None for COVID. They waited until it was too late to properly warn folks. https://twitter.com/josecastillo/status/1240397385894952961

Boards, ordered. Documentation, done; a subset of it, typeset in a booklet to send with the board. Bootloader programming sketch, done. Test suite, done (it plays Vivaldi to test the headphones). Demo sketch, done. Board photos, done. @kitspaceorg BOM, almost done. Almost done!

This interview happened a few months back: before the Feather contest, before some revisions to the board, and oh, before this whole virus thing. But the timing is auspicious: the blank Open Book PCB should be up on @tindie next week! This week has been the mad dash of finishing.
(original)
Very cool: The Open Book is featured, alongside several awesome open source hardware and software projects, in NODE VOL 02! This issue is “all about building the world you want to see,” which is I sense is exactly the kind of ethos we need for this moment. https://n-o-d-e.net/zine/

Another useful data point for folks considering dropping Facebook ads in this #StopHateForProfit campaign. Facebook is not just not a force for good in this world; it is abetting racism and actively promoting science denialism. #StopClimateDenialForProfit https://popular.info/p/facebook-creates-fact-checking-exemption

John Gruber’s point from earlier this month — “Facebook’s real risk here… is getting branded as the social network for racists” — feels even more dire today. Now I wonder if companies that stick around will be perceived as abetting Facebook’s practices. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2020/06/01/facebook-revolt https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1275813497331486723

(But seriously, the America that we once knew is dead and gone; the damage to our institutions and the rule of law is so deep and profound that I fear it may be irrevocable. You have to vote for the democrat, because we have to try. Still, just know, it may already be too late.)

“I had a professor who said once, ‘When the law is on your side, argue the law. When the facts are on your side, argue the facts. And if you don’t have the law on your side, and you don’t have the facts on your side, bang your fist on the table as loud as you can.’” - Jed Bartlet https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1275833865505046528

I sense that using partial refresh this would be possible; it’s a feature where small areas of screen can be updated quickly, as long as the screen gets a full refresh later. I sense I’ll end up testing a feature like this in the coming months as I work on the user interface :)
(original)
writing the troubleshooting sections of the Open Book guide; I’ve screwed up this build enough times, I’m an expert in ways to screw up. “If the screen has static…” “If the image won’t verify…” “If you don’t see 3.3 volts from the regulator…” “If you see MORE than 3.3 volts…”

So we made the outbreak in the United States — by far the worst outbreak in the world — far worse by testing fewer people when it was most important. As a result our outbreak is even worse than the numbers suggest, because we made the testing worse. Courtesy of the Best People™. https://twitter.com/Acyn/status/1274500811486228482

Saw that! It’s rad to see so many folks stoked about it, but I’m also feeling ambivalent that it seems to have been posted by some kind of karma farming bot. Now coming to the realization that this year isn’t going to get any easier, and the only way the work is going to get done is if I do the work. Is it good work? Work the world needs right now? The best work to do in the time that I have? Maybe, maybe not, but mostly: do the work.

just finished 12,000 words of documentation for the Open Book, from build tips to flashing the bootloader, testing, troubleshooting and explaining each part on the board. I’d hoped to have this done 3 months ago, but it’s been tough to know where to focus. https://github.com/joeycastillo/The-Open-Book/wiki/Open-Book-Documentation

Not only that: that thread (and associated blog post at the author’s website) seem to be the sole sources for the report Trump is citing. The thing we were laughing at got parroted on TV (by propaganda network @OANN); the president believed it; and now many others do too. Insane.

This thread is an EXCELLENT primer on an issue that I admit I didn’t understand at first. The cruxy bit: it’s not utopian thinking, like we’ll all get along without police. It’s about rethinking the role of police dramatically, and addressing social ills instead of policing them. https://twitter.com/TravelingNun/status/1268510966116954114

…we know, YOU are afraid of US," ends that tweet. This whole thread is worth a read.
