All week I’ve been trying to focus on making progress on Open Book for the folks who built one or plan to. So many things to do that I’ve been having trouble figuring out where to start. I have documentation to write, but the documentation… https://mastodon.social/@joeycastillo/109317179003540950

A while back I read about a fireworks conference and I keep wanting to crash it; apparently there’s a demo area where night after night they just blow up the state of the art in pyrotechnics.

I mostly make stuff; “hacking” in the sense of the hacker ethic, but I’m not in infosec or anything. I do have one CVE to my name, but only because I was trying to make stuff and the vuln was breaking my shit.

Battery test, day 365: 2.69 volts and y’all: WE MADE IT! We did the math, we did the science, and now I can say that Sensor Watch has year-long battery life because this battery lasted a full year. 54 days to the new one; will it see 2023? Will it outlast Twitter? Let’s find out!

First Hackaday #Supercon in the books, and what an absolute WHIRLWIND. So wonderful to FINALLY meet so many of you wonderful makers and hackers and see all the amazing stuff you’ve been doing. My heart feels so full (even if my body feels the need to sleep for the next day or 3!)

I mean that’s what Mastodon is for at this point; the #electronicstwitter migration is well underway. Over at supercon this weekend most speakers had already updated their slides with mastodon handles. Point is, what’s happening is happening; I’m just here for the popcorn now. 🙃

I sense it could go way longer; I’m waking the CPU 4x a second for the display update, but I could do the scroll in standby. Re: Sharp display tho, I’m curious as well; I recently found a 1.3" Memory LCD prototype with a coin cell that I built back in March, and it’s still going!

yea it was a quick mockup, I was too lazy to tweak the middle segment, but I did this for one of the characters on the Sensor Watch dev board. You split segment G in the middle, and add an eighth segment H as the downstroke. Gives you capital M, W, I and a plus sign.

Replying to @bradanlane and @einer54321
*puts market research hat on* how would you feel about eight segments? Gets you unambiguous glyphs for most everything, tho some can only be lowercase. (X remains endlessly wacky)

This is an interesting challenge: the power-on reset requires a bit more power than our low energy scroll, and if it’s overcast, the solar cell can’t quite get the chip started. But once it gets a kiss of sunlight, we can run the scrolling animation forever in indirect light!

The code! Written in this newfangled gossamer framework I’m hacking on. It’s all in this file — which also serves as decent documentation for working with character mapping on the @MicrochipMakes SAM L22’s integrated segment LCD peripheral. https://github.com/joeycastillo/gossamer/blob/049841043e6831b4ca7286b6cdbcf7e005cff355/apps/nametag/app.c

Yep! Or hardware, technically; the SAM L22 has an LCD peripheral designed to drive these kinds of raw LCD glass displays. Several of its GPIOs can be assigned to generate the required AC waveforms.

Replying to @einer54321 and @bradanlane
Yep! Standby mode on the SAM L22. Technically the CPU wakes briefly for every display update, but I can optimize further: the LCD peripheral has an automated character mapping mode that should be able scroll for me with the CPU permanently asleep 😴

I haven’t! This is the same chip as Sensor Watch, which draws something like 6µA with the LCD and RTC running. This gadget dispenses with the RTC, but it also has an LDO (AP7354) regulating the solar down to 3.3V… anyway you got me, now I’m curious!

It’s a @MicrochipMakes SAM L22, which has an integrated segment LCD driver. I tweaked Adafruit’s basic SAM D21 Feather to work with the low power SAM L21 and L22 microcontrollers, just to have a Feather oriented platform to hack on these chips :)
