Sensor Watch backer update going out in a few, but the gist is this: things are happening! As such I’ve decided to make it an Open Book revival day over here; it’s been a long time since I’ve looked at the firmware, and I think it’s time to apply some lessons learned.

LCD FeatherWing test jig — now significantly improved with the addition of some nylon screws and nuts. I can test 1,000 of these on this. (and naturally the test jig will be open source as well)

Soon I hope! This is one of just five engineering samples I got for validation, but I have an initial order of 1,000 displays in production now (and all the chips and PCB’s on hand to make that many of the wings, if that many folks want to buy one)

oh and to be clear: about three weeks of battery life with the sort of standard, fit-between-the-headers, 400 mAh battery from Adafruit. You could even ensmallen the gadget further by skipping the wing doubler and just stacking the wing directly atop your Feather of choice :)

The code! Uses the RTC and a TimeAlarm to update on the minute, so the clock’s always up to date. Also makes use of sleep_memory to keep track of our current mode, since we’re starting from scratch each time we wake up. Clocks in at about 50 lines. Simple! https://gist.github.com/joeycastillo/fbb68032d98b6035c50bfd1ecbdb9a5d

A minimal low-power #CircuitPython project for the LCD Wing and ESP32-S2 Feather: Time, Temperature, Humidity and Battery Gauge. When the moon icon is lit, CircuitPython is in deep sleep, and the gadget is consuming under 750µA. I’d expect about 3 weeks of battery life for this.

It would be really interesting to discharge a battery to like 2.7 volts, and then see how long it takes the watch to get down the rest of the curve. Now that we’re over 50% on the year long battery test, that piece of data might fill in our gap at the end. https://mobile.twitter.com/josecastillo/status/1523024032983306240

My goal is to have all the SMT done by a PCBA facility, and to sell it as a mostly-assembled FeatherWing where you just have to solder the through-hole parts (LCD and header pins).

A lot of that 714µA on the M4 feather comes from the Neopixel; you could drop maybe 500µA from the budget by yanking it off. But even the M0 and Arduino: imagine a Feather shaped gadget with that small 400 mAh battery. It could last 24 weeks on one charge, with always-on display!

The thing that makes this wing special: low power consumption. With the display on, it draws just 10µA! Depending on your choice of Feather, that’s:
• 730µA for the ESP32-S2 Feather with CircuitPython deep sleep
• 714µA on Feather M4
• 96µA on Feather M0! (Arduino + SleepyDog)(original)

We’re in an abusive relationship with our technology. The chat bot’s feelings are hurt. The panopticon is sad over how much you’ll miss your friends when you’re gone. Even your OS acts like a malignant narcissist when it comes time to update: you can only say “Yes”, or “Not Now”. https://twitter.com/jessamyn/status/1527071087397416966

Anyway please consider backing it! I know it’s already close and will probably make its goal, but it’s also a chance to own a piece of original work from a brilliant artist — and honestly, this would look good on your bookshelf, don’t you think? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/recliningliberty/move-reclining-liberty-to-jersey-city

At the most generous pledge level, he’s also offering a pair of the original fabrication drawings, and I must say it was wild to see how he put together this statue. She had to be sliced up and reconstituted from foam, fiberglass, resin and even waterjet-cut steel (for the crown)

This is kind of fascinating because we riffed a bit on these all year. At first, they were based off of a scan of the 2-foot-long model he used while sculpting the 24-foot Liberty. Later he had a 3D scanning firm scan the real statue in the park, and the new prints are from that.
