I feel this sometimes with my stuff. but when i get back to it, it’s like seeing an old friend and picking up right where we left off :)

today at @the_prepared we seeded an economy with PCB art. Lead-free HASL, blue solder mask; designed in Illustrator CS3.
(also side note, if you’re in NYC and want to join our lunch economy, there are open benches at the shop!) https://theprepared.org/workshop(original)
programming note: this Sunday afternoon I’ll likely do another livestream assembling a panel of Sensor Watch boards. I enjoyed doing it with the Open Book prototype last month; could see making it a monthly activity, building a thing & sharing the process. https://twitter.com/josecastillo/status/1401605385190969346

rephrase: it is in wide enough use that a client might expect me to use it, and not as a prank.

Sensor watch is close! I made a quick video showing what it actually looks like to turn a classic Casio F-91W into a slightly smarter gadget. The process actually took 4 minutes but I trimmed it down to 90 seconds. Tools required: hands, Phillips screwdriver, tweezers (optional).

google docs should really look into this technology. i think it could be a game changer, in 1992.
(original)
How is it possible Google Docs doesn’t support custom paragraph styles? Is this some kind of prank someone is pulling on me? If so, it’s a good one.
It’s eaten the world, everyone uses it, yet it’s missing a basic feature that’s been in MS Word since — *checks Wikipedia* — 1991?!(original)

It’s actually Micro-B! I think I could make a mechanically compatible USB-C connector on the PCB, but there’s no room for the two resistors I’d need to configure it as an upstream-facing device.

90% of the work goes to getting the thing 90% of the way there. then another 90% of the work goes to nailing down that last 10%.
hey, I don’t do the math here. I just do the work.(original)

I watched that! And decided that it wasn’t worth it. I could probably disassemble the tag, but the sound seems to be tied to the acoustic characteristics of the housing. Even light pressure on the AirTag’s plastic is enough to mute it. IDK if I could make that work in a DIY case.
(original)
from time to time i 3D print something and it happens really fast. I can’t overstate how futuristic it feels to summon a useful object into being in literally 15 minutes. anyway: AirTag wallet insert. It printed quick because there’s no top or bottom layer https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4849497

(up to this point the only way to flash new code was via the SWD test points, using a custom hand-made pogo pin connector that nobody should be expected to build or have on hand. USB code upload was absolutely necessary to make this gadget make sense.)
(original)
NOW IT GETS INTERESTING! With the UF2 bootloader and double tap reset, flashing new code to the watch is as simple as copying a file. This is just blinky stuff. But the idea is: disassemble the watch; plug into USB; flash ur code; then put it back together and back on your wrist.

this bug was the last blocker to being able to make a run of watch PCBs; looking back, I’m embarrassed to admit it’s been two and a half months since I identified it. then again there was a full-time job and a new book prototype in that time, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://twitter.com/josecastillo/status/1381474555391270915

reopened the bootloader code today; within minutes found the error that had broken double-tap reset. my delay was too short, so I couldn’t double-tap fast enough to trigger it. I don’t even know where I pulled the wrong values from; all I had to do was copy the SAMD21 defaults 🤦🏽♂️

In the AOL era you could talk to a stranger online and — worst case scenario — you get a stalker at your middle school dance. Now talk to a stranger online and you might accidentally convince him to mine all the coal in West Virginia to turn the Pacific Northwest into a fireball.

apologies for the lack of project updates. I’ve been focused on finishing _dayjob stuff, while also enjoying summer in the city. this hasn’t left much room for the work. tonight I opened some bootloader code, and felt too tired to even. hoping to reach a more balanced place soon.

#Pride2021 advice: do what the fuck you want. Your queer sexuality is good and beautiful and full of a hell of a lot more possibilities than the hetero norm. Don’t let their shame or fear dictate your path. There are far more interesting paths open to you that they’ll never know.

not in a healthy way, that’s for sure. My tendency is to fall toward burnout, fulfill both job and work, and neglect friendships and life and self-care. when I start to see that, I take a break from the job. but I know I’m privileged to be in a situation where that’s possible.

to be clear: I like the job. I’m great at the job. But in the end, the job’s the thing you do for them, and the work’s the thing you do for you. no matter how much you like it or how much it pays: the job is not the work.

since getting back from break, I’ve been feeling a bit of woe over the state of the work. drew some pictures to help myself understand. I want to be balanced. but I’ve spent much of this year swinging toward burnt out. Now with _dayjob in its final stretch, I’m just unproductive.
