woke up at 5 to watch the launch, fully expecting to catch a few more hours of sleep after. then laying in bed my brain had to have an IDEA and fuck it, we’re doing this. sleep when ur dead.

when I’m not talking to Siri I mostly use @CARROT_app, which I appreciate because it doesn’t even pretend to have empathy.

Going on a morning run; it’s spring, right? Asked Siri for a weather report.
“It’s cloudy and 37°.”
Made it as far as reaching for shorts before exclaiming, “37?!”
Siri had no response, but I would have appreciated an “Ugh, I know, right?” Artificial empathy. Maybe a bad idea.(original)

as a side note, this excerpt is from an @atlasobscura article about how Henry Ford may (or may not?) have saved Thomas Edison’s dying breath in a small glass test tube sealed with paraffin. Either way, it’s on display in Dearborn, Michigan. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/edisons-last-breath-henry-ford-museum

worth mentioning that given Amazon’s problematic business practices, I think a lot of folks would view an Amazon gift card as less than worthless. like, I wouldn’t enter a drawing where I can’t ethically redeem the prize. Amazon is unique in this list for its toxic connotations.

we’re not a country anymore, though. there is no shared horror because there is no shared identity, no foundation for empathy. I sense the threshold is, folks will change their minds when their immediate community is directly affected by a mass shooting, and not a day sooner.

The work-in-progress is up; still working out a few issues, but this repo has the version I’m testing now. No dealbreakers, but the items remaining:
* buttons are a bit hard to press
* QFN pad is too big
* still working out ideal capacitors for 32k crystal

a couple years ago I fell butt-first down some stairs due to poor sock choices. nothing broke, I was fine, and when my doc checked me out she said offhand, “you’re young and healthy!” this stuck with me, because at some point in my life I won’t be young anymore…

code is not remotely ready for prime time, but that’s fine; the goal isn’t to polish this silly demo in bare-metal C, it’s to get a higher-level language running on the watch ASAP. alas, I broke my wrist this week, so I’m half the coder I usually am 😭
(original)
I have big plans for the watch. but it could take a bit. In the meantime, I wanted to make a more interesting demo than a counter and LED. So: the Martian Watch. Shows the time on Terra (Earth) & Mars. One possible thing you could do with an ARM Cortex M0+ in a 33mm watch case :)

this is the fox news headline if our former president had actually shot someone in the middle of fifth avenue
(original)
This is a fascinating artifact. It’s not until the fifth paragraph that we get to “the President had been shot through the head,” after details of the name of the play, the delightful second act, and General Grant’s absence (owing to his having taken a late train from New Jersey) https://twitter.com/AdrianMorrow/status/1382416525685047297

This was great, Tara! When I talk to folks about this, would it be useful framing to say that this pause to get more data & develop treatment recommendations (if there is a link) makes the vaccine safer? Like, if we know what to look for / how to treat it, the risk is even lower.

I love this little poetic microframework.
- I acknowledge what I’ve done.
- I acknowledge you would have preferred I hadn’t.
- “Forgive me.” (I’m not sorry.)
- I offer an explanation that erases you coldly from the narrative.

Definite 👍🏽 to Affinity Photo; I don’t have the muscle memory for it just yet, but it’s what I’ll move to once CS3 bites the dust. Also Final Cut Pro X for video and @Procreate on the iPad for drawing and art; not the same tool as Illustrator, but AMAZING. https://twitter.com/SnaccHBG/status/1381707646466658312

still using my copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 from grad school, and I’ve never been more satisfied. It’s a bit glitchy from time to time, and I have to keep a macOS Mojave partition around to run it, but it hasn’t tried to charge me $200 in over a decade.

PHEW. took one more hour but I’ve never been so happy to see a blinking light. blinky firmware successfully loaded on to the SAM L22 via UF2. it’s still a bit buggy: double tap reset doesn’t work, and the USB gets confused sometimes, but this opens the door to some POSSIBILITIES.

calling it a night. still I accomplished more than I thought I would today! I can get my firmware onto the device, and I can read it back out; to some extent, the thing works. issue now is getting the bootloader to actually jump to my code. Nevertheless: within striking distance.

OKAY! This is good. This is very very good. After tweaking some calibration values, the bootloader seems to work: I can pull the existing UF2 off of the device and copy it back on. no code in there yet, of course; now I just need to generate a valid UF2 with some blinky firmware.
